Your new story is good
My only note is a small one
There are no insects in it
It’s summertime in it
Your narrator has been brought low
He should be covered with insects
He should be scratching insect bites
They could be a constant torment
or there but he doesn’t notice
Your narrator doesn’t care about anything
The insects could work cosmic justice
They could restore balance in the universe
Insects in your story would be a miracle
the reader might not notice
but would make all the difference
But it’s your story
You can put what you want in it
